6 Ways to Celebrate Arizona's Birthday

It’s about that time for Arizona to celebrate its 111th birthday on Tuesday, February 14th. Join in the fun and show Arizona some love.

A Little History

President Taft signed the bill that changed Arizona from a territory to a state. You may wonder why the bill was signed on Valentine’s Day. Many people wanted the bill to be signed on February 12th, on President Lincoln’s birthday, but Taft was out of town. The 13th was known to be bad luck (even way back then), so the bill was signed on the following day, which happened to be Valentine’s Day. Arizona was the last of the congruous states to be admitted to the Union.

Celebrate Arizona

There’s a lot to love about Arizona, so enjoy all that the state has to offer. February is a wonderful month in Arizona, so take advantage of the weather and do the things that you love the most. I’ve rounded up five ways to celebrate Arizona’s birthday and Valentine’s Day.

  • Pack up your favorite picnic meal and enjoy your lunch in the desert.

  • Make the most of the weather and head to a nearby trail and enjoy a hike. A few popular hikes near Yuma are Telegraph Pass and Muggins Wilderness Mountain.

  • Go for a scenic drive and watch the colorful sunset.

  • Visit a ghost town to learn bout the booming mining towns that were bustling in the 1800s. A few places to visit are Castle Dome, Jerome and Tombstone.

  • Visit a museum to learn about the spirit of the west .

  • Hit the road and spend a day at one of the state parks or US National Parks. It’s a great time of year to visit the Petrified Forest.

Have fun celebrating Valentine’s Day and the statehood of the 48th state!
