10 Things to Know Before you Visit the U.S. Virgin Islands
The U.S. Virgin Islands (USVI) are absolutely stunning and if they aren’t on your bucket list, they should be. The islands are full of vibrant colors, sandy beaches and warm ocean waters. What more could you ask for!?!
The U.S. Virgin Islands consists of three major islands and several little cays and islets. The well known islands are St. Croix, St. John and St. Thomas. Each island has its own vibe. St. Croix has more of a historic feel, St. John has the most undeveloped land, since the majority of the island is a U.S. National Park. St. Thomas is the most developed, with the largest airport.
What to Know Before You Go
When planning a trip to the USVI keep these tips in mind.
Check the weather for the time of year you would like to visit. Temperatures range between the 70s and 80s all year long. Yes, you read that correctly. I would stay away during hurricane season, which runs September through November. The drier months are the most popular in the islands, which include December - April. Expect some humidity and possibly an afternoon shower that will clear up quickly.
While the USVI are a territory of the U.S., plan on going through customs when returning to the mainland.
You do not need a passport to visit the USVI, but if you make plans to go to the British Virgin Islands, a passport is required.
Take my advice and arrive at the airport 2-3 hours prior to your departing flight out of St. Thomas. The airport is small, but manages several airlines.
The COVID restrictions are most likely different from where you reside. Check the official website for current regulations. The website seems to be updated on a monthly basis. For instance, as of March 7, 2022, if you are fully vaccinated, you are no longer required to take a COVID test prior to your arrival.
Book your hotel sooner than later. I held out to book hotel rooms and by the time I did book, there were few options left. I highly recommend staying at a beach front hotel. Easy access to the beach is always a plus!
Cars drive on the left side of the road, so if you’re planning on renting a car, be ready! If you’re not up for driving, take a taxi. There are plenty of taxis on the islands that can take you where you need to go. Uber and Lyft are not available in the USVI. Posted rates are available here.
The U.S. Virgin Islands are casual! One more reason why I love visiting! Of course, feel free to get dressed up for a fun evening out, but there is no pressure. Shorts, tees and flip-flops are a standard dress code.
The islands are on the Atlantic Standard Time Zone. That’s one time zone after the Eastern Stand Time Zone.
When visiting the islands, you’ll quickly be “on island time,” which if you ask me, is the BEST time! Things run at a slower pace, and no one is in a hurry. This is a great reminder to relax and enjoy your time to disconnect and enjoy your vacation.
I have visited the USVI twice and believe me, it was hard to leave each time. The USVI is great for families, couples and friend getaways. It’s even better if you travel with like-minded travelers. Are you up for adventure? Relaxing? A bit of both? There really is something for everyone, especially with a cocktail or two in hand.
