5 Healthy Hiking Snacks

When I go hiking, I make sure to pack a snack or two. I don’t necessarily need the snack, but hey you never know when you need a little energy boost to keep on trekking. I’m sharing my favorite snacks that I have on rotation and carry in my daypack.

The Snacks

  • Cheese & Fruit: Pack a few slices of your favorite cheese and pair it with an apple or other fruit of your choosing.

  • Energy Date Balls: There are a ton of recipes for date balls and the best part is, they are all pretty simple and take less than 15 minutes to make. Dates are a great source of protein and potassium. Take a look at this round-up of recipes.

  • Hummus & Crackers: Are you needing a little variety with your hiking snacks? Pack a little hummus, crackers and if you have space grape tomatoes or carrots. This is a tasty snack that you can share with your hiking friends, too.

  • Good ‘ole PB Sandwich: It’s amazing what a half peanut butter sandwich can do for you. Depending on the length of your hike, you may need multiple snacks. Choose a nut butter and slice of bread of your liking and you’re good to go for quite some time.

  • Trail Mix: Make your own mix that includes a variety of your favorite nuts, dried fruit and a little chocolate. There are a few benefits to making your own mix…

    • 1) Include the ingredients that you like the most

    • 2) You’ll save some money creating the mix at home, when compared to purchasing it from the store

    • 3) The combinations of trail mix are endless, so keep changing it up.

A Few Reminders

  • Don’t forget to take more water than you’ll think you’ll need

  • Pack a snack to share with your hiking friends

  • Remember to leave no trace, so take all of your trash with you.

  • Take your snacks in reusable containers such as Bees Wrap or reusable food storage bags.

Enjoy the trails, just remember to be prepared with water and a snack or two!
