Even More To Do in Tucson, Arizona
If you’ve been following my journey for a bit with Life in the Desert, then you know that Tucson, Arizona has a piece of my heart. I was fortunate to attend the University of Arizona and live in the Old Pueblo for 4 years. I am forever grateful for that time and always appreciate visiting.
Our oldest daughter attended a summer camp on Mt. Lemmon. This allowed us to plan two weekends, back to back in Tucson. While, I definitely have my go-to places when visiting Tucson, I do appreciate trying something new. Tucson is a fabulous destination to visit year-round. While some of you may call me crazy for that statement, keep reading to find out all there is to do.
Where to Eat
When you’re in the mood for an amazing breakfast burrito, head over to the Barrio Hollywood neighborhood. Place an order at Barista Del Barrio. Let’s just say the food was incredible! They were voted for the Best Breakfast Burrito for a reason. This place doesn’t mess around with their food. Everything from the burritos, to the tea were off the charts! Oh and don’t forget to order a tamale. The Green Chile Tamale was full of flavor and paired so well with the beans and salsa. I highly suggest ordering your food early, before the long lines form. This is definitely a family owned business that you will be happy to support.
I am always craving Mexican food while in Tucson, so I have to share an old favorite restaurant of mine, located in South Tucson. Mi Nidito opened it’s doors in 1952. This restaurant is sure to have a full parking lot at all times. You can count on authentic, delicious food. My recommendations are the enchiladas and folded tacos. The chimichangas are also incredible, but be prepared because it’s a giant serving! Note that the restaurant is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays.
A few other spots that have great food in the area are North Italia, Oregano’s and Culinary Dropout. They each have something for everyone on their menus. I am also a huge fan of dining on University or 4th Ave.
What to Do
Visit the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum , which is located just next door to Saguaro National Park (which is also worth visiting). The museum has various exhibits that include wildlife, gardens and even a Stingray Touch. Yes, who would have thought a Stingray Touch would be in the middle of the desert. This was a highlight for the kids, especially since we visited on a hot summer day and this exhibit is in the shade. Take a reusable water bottle with you that you are able to refill throughout the park. The park opens at 7:30 AM during the summer months, take advantage of the early opening, so you can enjoy all that the museum has to offer before it gets too hot.
Tucson is another Dark Sky City. Learn even more about the solar system at the Flandrau Science Center and Planetarium, located on the University of Arizona Campus. They have additional exhibits that include sharks, the Earth’s surface and more! The hands-on activities are great for all ages. Make sure to catch a show at the planetarium during your visit.
Ride the Sun Link Streetcar downtown. You can hop on and off the car at several spots along the route. This is a convenient way to get around, especially if you don’t want to worry about parking. Rates start at $2.00 for a 2 hour pass or $4.50 for a day pass.
Several resorts offer fantastic summer deals, which makes this a budget friendly destination. As you plan your next adventure in Tucson, make sure to try out a few of the places I recommend and let me know what you think!
