Hiking Pilot Knob
The temperatures are a little cooler in the desert, so it is time to get out and hike. I am working on spending more time outside and hitting the trails more often. Continue to check the blog for additional tips and info on hikes.
A moderate hike that has great views is Pilot Knob. This hike is located near Winterhaven, California off of Sidewinder Road and I-8. When you exit I-8 at Sidewinder Road, take a left at the stop sign to cross over the freeway. Drive south along the road and continue straight on the gravel road. Turn left at the trail signs and park your car at the foot of the peak.
There are several hiking trails that you can use. It can be a “choose your own adventure” with the route that you take. You can do a little bouldering or stay on the trails. Though the start of the trail isn’t marked, you can start on the west side. hike to the top, where the area is marked with an antenna. From that point, take a rest and take in the views. You are able to see Arizona, California and Mexico from the top. Head east on the ridge and hike down the east side.
This is not a highly trafficked trail, so you are likely to have the area to yourself.
The length of the hike is 1.4 miles with an elevation of 538 feet. You can make the hike longer by following different paths.
Recommendations
Watch your steps, there is a lot of loose rock along the trail.
Where good shoes
Make sure to bring plenty of water. I suggest carrying water and other items in a light day pack. It’s always good to have your hands free when hiking.
Leave no trace
If you’re hiking solo, make sure to let someone know where you’re headed. Check in with them when you return to your vehicle.
