It’s Time for a Detour

Views from the Boulder Park

The drive from Arizona to San Diego is routine for many of us. From Yuma, the quick 2 1/2 hour drive allows for some scenic views and before you know it, you have arrived in San Diego. The next time you plan to make the drive, change up your route and plan for a stop in Jacumba. Yes, you read that correctly.

Take the In-Ko-Pah Road Exit, head east until the road ends and you’ll arrive at the Desert View Tower.

Boulder Park

A Little History

The tower was built in the 1920s by Bert Vaughn, a former mayor of San Diego. Vaughn purchased Jacumba and began to develop the area. It is said that the tower was built in honor of the pioneers and those that worked on the roads to give access to the area.

What to Expect

Many people are curious about the tower and stop and check it out during their road trips. Admission is $6.50 for adults and $3.50 for children. The tower is open daily from 9 am - 5 pm. The admission fee includes entrance to the tower and the Boulder Park.

Climb the spiral staircase to the top to take in the beautiful desert views. Check out the gift shop and then head across the parking lot to explore the Boulder Park.

The Boulder Park has several rocks that have been painted. You can climb through the area to see each of the creatures that have been painted. This really is a perfect place to stretch your legs, have the kids get the wiggles out and take in the views before carrying on your way.

If you are interested in staying a bit longer, check out the airbnb listing. Believe it or not, this unique roadside attraction is also for sale.

The next time you hit the road and are driving west along the I-8, make sure to stop and take this detour.
