Why Having a Bucket List is a Good Idea

Bucket lists can be a fun topic of conversation. I mean, why not think about where you would like to travel to or things that you would like to accomplish in your life?!?

If you don’t have a bucket list, there is no better time than now to start jotting down your list. Maybe there is a travel magazine that you have glanced through and a destination or two caught your eye. Or maybe there was a destination that you’ve been dreaming about for years that was in a book you read or a friend told you about. Add those places to your list.

How to Keep Track of your Bucket List

I highly encourage you to have an actual list that you are using to keep track of your bucket list. There are numerous ways to keep your list. Take a look at the recommendations for your upcoming travels.

  • Creating a board on Pinterest with destinations and tips that you find to go along with the destination. Remember that you can always turn your boards to “private” if you would like others not knowing what is on your bucket list.

  • Jotting down your ideas in a notebook. My favorite notebooks are Field Notes. I love that sense of accomplishment of crossing items off of my list or including additional details about when the item was added and when it was completed. A an area to doodle is always nice, too.

  • Similar to Pinterest, save interesting destinations that come across your Instagram feed to a collection. There are many accounts on Instagram sharing great travel information.

  • Use the Notes app on your phone to keep an ongoing list.

Making Your Bucket List a Reality

One thing is for sure, the bucket list you make is YOURS! Your list can be made of small to outrageous things that you would like to do. Some items on your list may be very doable now and others may require you to save for a long time. Either way, make sure you include all of the items and begin to make a plan to make those experiences a reality.

Making the items on your list a reality requires planning.

  • Determine an estimated budget for the items on your list

  • Establish the amount of time you would like for each destination

  • Look at your calendar and consider the PTO you have accumulated

  • Consider what other commitments you have made

Then begin to put the pieces of your puzzle together. Maybe you are able to cross off one item a year on your list or maybe some years allow you to cross off more than one. It is always motivating to have experiences to look forward to in your future. I think it really puts everyone in a good mood, when they have a trip planned and it’s on the calendar.

Take my advice, If you start your list now, it will help you make a plan for crossing those items off of your list.
