5 Fun Things to Do in Arizona, Even When it’s Still Hot
Arizona is known for its stunning landscapes, desert sunsets, and, let’s face it, the heat. As a desert dweller, I’ve learned to embrace the warmth, and I’m here to tell you that even when the temperatures soar, there’s still plenty of fun to be had! Whether you’re visiting or are a local, here are five things to do in Arizona that will make you forget all about the sizzling sun.
1. Take an Early Morning Hike
Arizona’s desert landscapes are breathtaking, and the key to enjoying them during the hot months is timing. Set your alarm early, and head out for a sunrise hike when the temperatures are cooler, and the desert is at its most peaceful. I recommend easy hikes for this time of year. Trails like Sabino Walkway Loop in Tucson or those in Papago Park in Phoenix are perfect for an early morning adventure. Don’t forget a hat, and plenty of water!
Pro tip: Aim to start your hike just before sunrise for cooler temps and a gorgeous light show over the mountains.
2. Explore the Desert Botanical Garden
For those who prefer a more leisurely experience, the Desert Botanical Garden in Phoenix is a perfect place to explore Arizona’s unique flora. Summer days are long, so head there in the morning or for one of their evening events to avoid the heat. They also host seasonal events and exhibits, many of which are indoors or in shaded areas.
Bonus: During the summer, the garden often extends its hours, allowing visitors to enjoy the cooler evenings while learning about desert plants.
3. Cool Off at Slide Rock State Park
What’s better than a natural water park in the middle of the desert? Slide Rock State Park, located in Sedona, is a must-visit when it’s hot outside. You can cool off by sliding down natural rock formations into refreshing creek water. It's a fun way to beat the heat, and the beautiful red rock scenery makes it even more enjoyable.
Be sure to pack a picnic, plenty of sunscreen, and water-friendly shoes because you’ll want to spend the whole day playing in the water.
4. Visit a Museum
Arizona is home to some incredible museums, and they’re the perfect place to escape the heat while soaking up a bit of culture. In Phoenix, check out the Heard Museum to learn about Native American history and art. For a unique experience, visit the Musical Instrument Museum and explore its vast collection of instruments from around the world.
These museums are air-conditioned (yay!), and you’ll leave feeling enriched, cooled off, and ready to tackle the rest of the day.
5. Take a Day Trip to Higher Elevation
Arizona’s diverse landscape means you don’t always have to endure the heat. Escape to cooler temperatures by heading to higher elevations like Flagstaff or Mount Lemmon near Tucson. In Flagstaff, you can explore the ponderosa pine forests, enjoy the charming downtown, or even visit Lowell Observatory for some stargazing. Mount Lemmon offers scenic drives, hiking trails, and even a little mountain village at the top where you can grab a bite to eat.
The best part? These destinations are typically 20-30 degrees cooler than the low desert, giving you a much-needed break from the summer heat.
Embrace the Heat & Adventure
Arizona’s heat is just another part of its charm, and there are plenty of ways to enjoy all the beauty this state has to offer—even in the hottest months. From early morning hikes to refreshing water spots, there’s no shortage of adventure. Just remember: stay hydrated, wear a hat and embrace the desert vibe!
